Childhood Cancer Awareness Month

This month, which just so happens to be September ‘Childhood Cancer Awareness’ month, we are distributing three grants of £1000 to each of the below charities.

While a couple of these charities are physically situated outside of Herefordshire, they still cover this geographical area where there is a need and their services are required.

Our family gratefully received help from all three when George was poorly and we continue to have support from Acorns.

Molly Ollys

Molly Olly’s was set up in memory of 8-year-old Molly and their aim is to provide support to children suffering from life-threatening illnesses and their families in the UK.
In an unimaginably difficult situation, they hope to make the dark days a little brighter.

Their main areas of work are:

  • Fulfilling wishes by providing gifts to individual children

  • Donating therapeutic toy Olly The Brave and his story books

  • Bespoke projects such as funding a Paediatric Palliative Care Consultant, and the furnishing of the Magnolia House palliative care facility, at Birmingham Children’s Hospital

  • They also run support events for families of seriously ill children including afternoon teas where families can meet and share experiences, and an annual ‘Remember Me’ day for families.

#BeMoreFrank a specially named fund of the Grace Kelly Childhood Cancer Trust

The GKCCT was founded in 2016 in memory of four-year-old Grace.

They fund research into rare and aggressive childhood cancers, educate families and clinicians about the signs and symptoms of childhood cancer and produce information booklets to explain to parents and children about the treatments they are facing.

Locally, they provide financial, practical, and emotional support to families through their support service. Giving families a listening ear at the time when they need it most. Because no family should fight childhood cancer alone.

Funds raised in Frank’s name solely and exclusively go to giving cold hard cash to families with a child diagnosed with cancer in Powys Monmouthshire & Herefordshire.

Acorn’s Children’s Hospice

A parent never imagines their child will be diagnosed with a life limiting or life threatening condition. But when the unimaginable happens, Acorns steps in, helping families cope at every stage of their child’s life and beyond, wherever and whenever they need it. The need for children’s hospice care never stops which is why they are there to provide specialist palliative care 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

At Acorns their dedicated team offers psychological, emotional and practical support. The team of health and social care professionals provide a range of services, including bereavement support and advocacy, as well as a number of dedicated support groups, helping to reduce the isolation some families can face.

At Acorns they understand that family time is precious when a child’s life is limited, and they support families in any way they can to create lasting memories.

The tailored care includes complex medical care, emergency and end of life care, short breaks and emotional and practical support. Every family is different, which is why their holistic package of care is tailored to meet the individual needs of each child and family, including cultural, religious and spiritual needs.
